As a responsible dog owner, it is your duty to do regular monitoring of unusual symptoms in your furry friend to keep them well-balanced and healthy. If you ignore these issues, it may lead to an irritable pet, and later treating these symptoms will become a costly affair.
Itchy dog ears and eye discharge are the common two infections from which most dogs suffer. In this content, you will come to know about various causes of dogs’ itchy and goopy eyes and ears and their possible treatment options.
What are the common causes of itchy dog eyes?
If your furry friend is suffering from inflamed and itchy eyes, it should be addressed at the earliest before it turns into a serious condition. In the inner corner of a dog’s eye, where tear ducts are found, groop takes place in such an area, and gradually, it causes dried tears, mucus, and oil. The substances become clear most of the time, but they may turn brown in color.
As long as your dog’s eyes don’t turn red, it is confirmed that they are not agitated by crust or goop, and you don’t need to worry at all. You just take a cotton ball and wipe the eyes clean. If you notice your dog is rubbing her eyes or squinting frequently, you should immediately bring her to a veterinarian. Treating your dog with eye drops is not suggested without consulting with a doctor.
Conjunctivitis
When conjunctivitis occurs, your dog’s eyes become crusty, red, and swollen, or if you see that your puppy’s eyes are blinking frequently or keeping your eyes closed most of the time, it is a clear symptom of conjunctivitis. The cause of conjunctivitis can be due to bacterial infection. If you find any such problem in your dog, you should immediately bring it to the veterinarian.
The doctor will thoroughly examine the eyes of the dog to see if it is due to any foreign body. If they find that the problem is due to this reason, the doctor will remove debris and objects.
On the other hand, if an allergy is the main reason behind the occurrence of such a situation, the doctor may describe antihistamines. Besides this, the doctor may suggest eye drops for treating conjunctivitis. However, if you think you may get this infection from your dog, you are wrong, as conjunctivitis is not a contagious disease.
Dry eyes
The opposite of the watery eyes of dogs is dry eyes. This condition takes place due to immune-related issues or congenital. It may also be the side effect of certain types of medicines. The possible symptoms of this disease include insufficient tear secretion, low tear production, etc. The symptoms may even lead to yellow or gray eyes, corneal ulcers, eye redness, and in extreme cases, blindness.
This type of situation arises due to many reasons. You should always keep an eye on the security and safety of your dogs while they are playing in the yard. If you have a yard in your house, try to create a boundary around the property by installing an underground dog fence. Most of the dog owners opt for this option in today’s age to give their dogs a safe and secure place to enjoy playful activities.
Dry eyes are also an issue if your puppy has a low immune system. It causes inflammation and deterioration of glands. There is no specific treatment that exists for treating dry eyes. Daily application of topical medicines can treat this condition.
